Putting rad back into Trad

Acoustra New EP out on March 11th 2011: ‘The way it used to be’

FREE from Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/goodseedpr/acoustra-the-way-it-used-to-be-2-57

Acoustra are a four-piece trad/folk/rock band from Limerick who have been writing and performing original material for ten years. Comprising of band members: Dylan ‘Bulitt’ Shine; Vocals, bass & acoustic guitar, Liam ‘Major’ McCarty; Vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin & banjo, Pat ‘Dats’ Wright; Vocals & accordion, and Brian ‘Stick’ Bermingham on Drums & Percussion.

They have a new EP out on March 11th 2011 - ‘The way it used to be’ – which tells of the current hardship we all face at the moment and the turmoil the government has the country in. The initial impetus for Acoustra came about in 2001 (for the craic) and the four-piece have never looked back since. They have a wide repertoire and a vast variety of songs ranging from original and covers, which they are known to play at gigs to rock the boat somewhat, but their utter passion resides in original song and tune writing of Trad fused with and deep rooted folk rock.

The band have performed worldwide and will continue in 2011 to fill up their touring schedules around Ireland, The Uk and Europe. (Full list of tour dates announced soon). They will also continue with their charity work with The Irish Society of Azerbaijan (where they have raised over half a million Euro for orphaned children) when they make their annual visit.

Their previous release was Single ‘Aynu (the tiny dancer)’, which was written in an orphanage in Baku (the capital of Azerbaijan). One of their continuing goals is to raise more money for these unfortunate children. The Irish Society of Azerbaijan & Acoustra have been recognised by President Mary McAleese for their extraordinary work in the country. The release of ‘Aynu’ opened a lot of new doors to travel for Acoustra, so it was nearly two years before they were able to complete their debut EP. This is an exciting time for the Trad/Folk/Rock scene in Ireland, as its about to be shook up Acoustra style!

Official Band statement: "We wrote The Way It Used to be, as we’ve seen what the government has done to the country. They spoonfed us and squandered our economies cash, so who are we to ask the people of Ireland to dig deeper into their pockets at such a trying time. We thought to opt to give this EP away for Free- All we ask is that you download a tune & pass the link on! Or follow us http://twitter.com/Acoustra, see you all at a gig in the future!"

Stephen Young And The union

STEPHEN YOUNG: Wilderness Machine
Album release: March 25th
Coke and Rum
Single: release: Feb 25th

Stephen Young first appeared on the music scene in late 2008 when the release of his debut EP: ‘A Boat Called Lottery’, garnered vast critical acclaim. This prompted Young to take his songs to a broader audience, as he put together a troupe of musicians called The Union to form his band and to set about recording an LP. Described as a visionary ricochet for the times we live in (The Daily Star), it is Young’s capacity to deliver a song with pounding heartfelt retrospect that will set him apart from his luminaries. Whether in a mellow mood or just plain aggressive, the music always comes from the heart. This is plain to see when witnessed in live performances.

The singer joined forces with producers Gavin Glass, Tommy O’Sullivan and engineer Stephen O’Brien to complete his debut album. The album’s title is ‘Wilderness Machine’. Young explains: “the concept of the album is loosely based on a character, who left his hometown after the break-up of a relationship and the death of a close friend. He moves to a remote house in the mountains where he writes a series of letters that lead to a novel”.

The recording process for the album took two years in total. It involved 11 different musicians in three different studios. Young was adamant on getting the right place at the right time to capture the imagery and overall sound of each song.
The first Single to be released on the album ‘Wilderness Machine’ will be ‘Coke & Rum’ on Feb 25th 2011. (Mastered by Aidan Foley). After a year of steadfast gigging in some of the country’s most illustrious intimate venues, Young and The Union begin their nationwide tour on Feb 18th (tour dates below). Anyone expecting to see a singer-songwriter soulfully whispering into a microphone should think again. This will be a fevered, rock n' roll countrified affair!

Band members:
Electric guitar and harmonica: John Sweeney, Drums: Steve Rogers & Johnny Byrne, Bass: Andy Moran & Ciaran Lane, Acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica & vocals: Stephen Young

examining the relationship between design and music. ...a great article.

Mbhk_underworldbytomato
'examining the relationship between design and music'. http://bit.ly/anGEkD a great article.

excerpt:

This series of articles aims to examine the relationship between design and music. How does one compliment the other? How do different designers solve the various creative problems of this discipline? What makes a successful (if not iconic) solution for music design? And how do creative partnerships in this field operate?

I can think of few more important, successful and inspiring case studies for this series than the creative partnership between Underworld and Tomato – which spans two decades, six studio albums, countless tours and side projects, a number of changes in personnel and numerous shifts in visual and musical style.

Throughout all this change, three players have remained at the core of the partnership and continue to work together today – Underworld’s Karl Hyde and Rick Smith (who have recorded together in various incarnations since 1980) and Tomato’s John Warwicker, who is an artist, designer, writer and conceptualist.

The work of John Warwicker and the music of Underworld have both played a massive part in the development of my own work, so I feel extremely privileged to have been able to speak with John about his relationship with the band, his process and how the visual identity of Underworld has evolved over the past 20 years.

I began my conversation with John by asking about how the dynamic between Tomato and Underworld has changed over time, how work is structured between the two and if any creative conflict exists within the partnership today...

THE TIME HAS COME:: ELEANOR MCEVOY's brand new album: 'I'd rather Go Blonde'

-Eleanor McEvoy-
I’D RATHER GO BLONDE
(MOSCD408)
Brand new studio album to be released 17th September

RMG are delighted to announce that a new Eleanor McEvoy studio album, entitled “I’d Rather Go Blonde”, is to be released on 17 September 2010 [Cat. No. MOSCD408].  The album features eleven new songs, nine of which were penned by McEvoy, one by former Beautiful South man Dave Rotheray and, finally, there’s a cover of “Good Times” by Sam Cooke.

“I’d Rather Go Blonde” is the eighth album in a twenty year career that has seen McEvoy establish herself as one of Ireland’s most accomplished singer / songwriters.  Never one to shy away from the big issues, this album sees McEvoy tackling themes such as alienation, hypocrisy, recent Irish history and romance.  The songs are typified by a lyrical élan and often leavened with a touch of humour – “For Avoidance Of Any Doubt” features a plaintive soul using her solicitor to berate an absent lover for not returning calls, and the title track is built around a phrase that just made McEvoy laugh!

As she says herself, “I always try to express myself clearly and honestly. I was the odd one, the tubby girl with glasses who had to go to violin lessons after school. The ray of sunlight was the radio with its music. The escape was learning to sing and play instruments and play with others and write and just get out there. Anyway this album is all me, and I am very proud of it.”

Her music has evolved and developed over her career and this album is a confident statement.  Her continuing absorption and influence by other forms of music continues to delight and confound any listener who may attempt to pigeon-hole her simply with reference to the winsome ‘Only A Woman’s Heart’ which appeared on the massively popular album “A Woman’s Heart” back in 1992. That was then, this is now! “I’d Rather Go Blond” has been mixed by Ruadhri Cushnan’ who did the breakthrough Mumford & Sons record of this year and has a willfully contemporary relevance.

She will also undertake a headline tour of her own in October/November where she will be playing tracks from throughout her career but also of course from “I’d Rather Go Blonde”.  See www.eleanormcevoy.com
For all updates.

Throughout her career, McEvoy has earned accolades and picked up various awards – not just for her work but also for the super high-end audio approach she has taken on various albums.  As well as standard CD format, this album will also be released as a 12 track stereo hybrid SACD/CD [MOSACD308] and on vinyl (through Diverse Records on 25 September).

Recorded at Westland Studios, the team, of Eleanor McEvoy, Mick O”Gorman, Peter Beckett (co producers of LOVE MUST BE TOUGH) and Ciaran Byrne Engineer, has expanded with the addition Gavin Fox (Ex Idlewild), Ross Turner (Cathy Davey, Jape) and the Mixing skills of Ruadhri Cushnan (Mumford and Son)

NEW SINGLE FROM BELFASTS FINEST:

PRESS RELEASE:: JOHN, SHELLY & THE CREATURES

NEW single: ‘FOOLS’ + bonus track ‘THE FIRST MOVE’ out Aug 13th
+ Live instore in Tower Records (Dublin) at 1pm on Aug 13th

‘FOOLS’ is a defiant twist of the multi faceted musical dimension of Belfast city’s: John, Shelly & the Creatures. Formed after a chance meeting they had in a bar in Berlin with two homeless Irish twins named 'John and Shelly'...it’s a really good story so we won't ruin it here for you.... but…none of the bands names are actually John or Shelly......

Made up of members: Kevin Carlisle (Drums, percussion & vox), Philip Watts d'Alton (guitar, vox, keys, bass, mandolin), Ger Gormley (bass, guitar, mandolin, vox) and Walter (guitar, vox, keys, programming and drums). They are influenced by a wide variety of genres and are unafraid to mix things up when it comes to recording and playing live.

The band play in select venues and at various festivals throughout the Summer of 2010. Their first single 'LONG MAY YOU REIGN', received (and still receives) critical acclaim. It featured in The Northern Irish Tourist Board TV, Radio and Cinema Advert. They performed the song live, to over 20,000 spectators in the RDS arena, which was a high moment for the band in their short career to date. Their last single ‘KILLER’ was performed live across a number of TV shows including Dave Fannings 11th Hour, BBC2’s Imeall Gael & on an official live web stream on Muzu.TV featuring JEDWARD (yes Jedward!) as the bands backing dancers.

On the lead up to their Debut album launch they performed on Ireland’s biggest and most well known TV show: THE LATE LATE SHOW, where Ryan Tubridy later invited the band to perform on his radio show for the reopening of the Natural History Museum. He described them as: “Not only a great band but a great bunch of lads”.

Achieving quite an accomplishment for an unsigned band doing it on their own, their album has received rave reviews from national publications, declaring the band as ‘BRILLIANT..  Dazzling’ (Irish Independent), ‘Sublime’ (Irish Mirror), “Effortlessly monumental’ (AU)...& destined for greatness… it was also hotly tipped for a Choice Music Prize Nomination by Irish Music Journalist Tony Clayton Lea of The Irish Times who wrote: “an exceptional grasp of texture, tone and theme. A shoe-in for next year’s Choice Music Prize nominations list?”

For now the band are working on album No.2 and looking forward to releasing a new single from the current album Dinosaur titled FOOLS.

THE CHARLATANS/// To release new album ŒWHO WE TOUCH¹ Sept 10th.

NEW RELEASE:::::::

THE CHARLATANS: NEW ALBUM ‘WHO WE TOUCH’ (COOKCD527) RELEASED 10/09/10
RADIO SINGLE: ‘Love Is Ending’ is released on July 30th.
ALBUM: ‘Who We Touch’ is released on September 10th.

With a career that has already spanned two decades, The Charlatans – Martin Blunt (bass), Jon Brookes (drums), Tim Burgess (vocals), Mark Collins (guitar) and Tony Rogers (keyboards) - release their new album ‘Who We Touch’, on September 10th 2010.

Their eleventh studio album, ‘Who We Touch’ was produced by Youth (Paul McCartney, Primal Scream and The Verve) and was recorded at Britannia Row in London, on the desk that New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ was recorded on. Featuring eleven tracks, the album must surely rank as their boldest to date radically broadening, in places, their aesthetic remit. It is, says Burgess, “a soulful voyage”, a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, ultimately concluding in blissful optimism. Its sound is inspired by many heroes, yet always sounds like no-one other than The Charlatans themselves.

Opener, ‘Love Is Ending’, is the first single to be taken from the album, released on July 30th. ‘Oh!’ is a beautiful song of reconciliation, as complex as its shifting time signatures (one section is in 3/4 waltz time), and then ‘You Can Swim’, an exquisite ooze of ambience, reminiscent of ‘Another Green World’-era Eno, with whose creative ideas the album began. Lurking at the end of the album is hidden track ‘I Sing The Body Eclectic’ featuring Crass’s Penny Rimbauld on vocals. Gee Vaucher who did the iconic artwork for all of Crass’s releases, also provides ‘Who We Touch’ with it’s eerie collaged cover image.

The full tracklisting is;
‘Love Is Ending’, ‘My foolish Pride’, ‘Your Pure Soul’, ‘Smash The System’, ‘Intimacy’, ‘Sincerity’, ‘Trust In Desire’, ‘When I Wonder’, ‘Oh!’, ‘You Can Swim’
